The basilica's construction began in 1858 under the guidance of architect Jean Eugène Fromageau and was completed in 1872.It was founded by Charles Lavigerie and has since stood as a testament to Algeria's colonial history and religious diversity.
Notre Dame d'Afrique showcases a harmonious blend of Roman and Byzantine architectural styles infused with Moorish influences.Its floor plan is unique and atypical as the choir is located on the southeast instead of the normal east side of the building.The exterior features a large central dome flanked by smaller domes, while the interior boasts intricate mosaics and detailed stained glass windows.
